We were approached by a client to recover monies owed to his company by a debtor totaling £5000. Although they had made every effort to recover the monies themselves they had been unsuccessful. Our client had become extremely frustrated with the debtor which had led to a complete breakdown in relationship between the two parties. Further to that our client felt that he was at risk personally if he were to continue to deal with the matter personally.

Although our client had information on the debtor’s previous address, he had been informed that the debtor had recently relocated. As a result we were employed to locate the debtor and recover the debt on his company’s behalf.

Our investigations led us to a possible area in which the debtor may have recently relocated. We then found the actual new build that the debtor had purchased. This property was quite clearly worth a substantial amount, which suggested that the debtor had indeed not been completely truthful with our client about his financial situation.

We knocked on the door and asked the female occupier if our debtor was available to talk. “He doesn’t live here” she abruptly replied, but we considered that to be strange as the bay window was littered with birthday cards to the debtor in question.

We therefore handed the female a copy of our correspondence notifying the debtor of request for payment.

We wished the female good day and returned to our vehicle. Thirty minutes later we received a phone call, it was the debtor. He advised us that he wanted to pay the monies owed and if we were to agree to his proposal would we suspend all further field visits? Our client agreed to the proposed payment plan which was staggered over three month. All monies were received, another job well done!

Quite often non payment of invoices isn’t down to a lack of affordability but an attempt to absolve oneself of debt in order to increase cash flow due to an inherent sense of greed. Consequently the debtor will not be truthful in order to make the debt disappear. Quite often this works as people just give up and put it down as a lesson learned.
